Sunwaves Festival has been announcing the timetable for its 32nd edition on Mamaia’s crazy beach, so I thought it would be a good time to share some historical data about this unique festival gathering people from all over the world, sharing is caring. From May 1st, Mamaia will therefore be hosting another exclusive Sunwaves edition featuring some of the best artists in the world, regardless what kind of music makes you vibrate from Joseph Capriati to Ricardo Villalobos, from Jamie Jones to Margaret Dygas or yet Sonja Moonear to Paco Osuna, swinging by all of your favorite music producers from Europe and of course, from Romania.
First of all, let’s rewind back in 2007 to storytell a bit about Sunwaves festival, where it comes from, who is part of it since the very debuts and how it became one of if not the best festival when it comes to music quality.
Sunwaves is indeed one of the best festivals, first of all because it is the first ever festival to have been creating a high standard for sound quality, they use the Funktion One sound system for each of their events, all set up according to the music played by the artists which is really cool, and as a matter of fact, the sound engineers from Sunwaves are definitely part of the most skilled around in the scene. The very first edition of Sunwaves festival was taking place in 2007 so a little 17 years ago, by this time such electronic music wasn’t the fancy it can have become today so it was mostly a gathering for similar music connoisseurs, and over time they made of their artistic programmation part of the most meticulous yet eclectic ones, with Romanian artists like Rhadoo, Raresh, Petre Inspirescu, Cezar, Praslea, Herodot, Kozo, Priku, Cristi Cons or Dan Andrei playing there since day zero and on a more international note, pioneer artists like ZIP, Ricardo Villalobos, Cassy, Marco Carola, or Seth Troxler are also on board of the Sunwaves experience since the very beginnings.
The Sunwaves festival itself is a true pioneer in every music and party things, they’ve been part of the first to add visuals to their musical events, to build their own wooden decorations in order to create an even cooler atmosphere, all of it to shape the best ever musical experience for like-minded music lovers. According to the edition, the Sunwaves festival used to last either 2, 3, 4 days or just 1, always on the beach of Mamaia, and it took a significant turn by 2011 by welcoming more artists to their line ups, such as Alexandra, Gescu, Margaret Dygas, Mihigh, Mahony, Miss I, Thomas Melchior, Fumiya Tanaka or tINI, just to name a few, making the festival grow and get even more international echo.
Sunwaves has always been pretty ahead of its time when it comes to its artistic selection by being always part of the first to host artists who would become heavily recognized for their music years later, making also of the festival on of the best ever turning point in any music performer career. Indeed, artists like Cabanne, Nastia, Matador, Arapu, Vlad Caia, Vera, Dubtil or Vincentiulian have been part of the adventure for more than 10 years, and they’re all obviously recognised for their music selections and productions worldwide today. Over the years, Sunwaves became the one festival any Dj wants to perform at, because not only the quality is met at all levels for artists, but also for party goers, everyone who comes at Sunwaves is having a wordless experience and timeless memories for absolute sure.
And this time of the year is right around the corner, yes, as Sunwaves just announced the full running order for its upcoming gathering on the beach of Mamaia, so let’s go further about it. First, things first, about the actual schedule, I know it could be basic but I also know many people are misreading the program, like I personally did as I haven’t seen some details until a couple years of attending it sooo, let me give you a little tip : there’s a running order of course but no specific times given, and this is on purpose as artists can be playing 6/8h or even more according to their desire, so it makes it sometimes complicated to handle everything time wise, set wise, so fyi on left side of the timetable, you can find the days but mostly the expected moment artists would play, you have both a sun and a star next to dates and of course, this relates to day and night times, so from this, make your maths and find your favorite artists 🪩
Let’s now talk about this 32nd edition program which will be inaugurated on Wednesday May 1st, and even though I’m literally missing the best part of it, the closing, I’ll do an almost full experience on the Crazy Beach of Mamaia.
However, what I love the most at Sunwaves is actually to discover the performances of music producers I love the music from, you can always have the best surprise you were not even thinking about, for example I remember back in 2019 I was looking forward for ZIP performance and just before him, Vlada was playing, I had no clue I would love her music this fucking much, so see I’m waiting for ZIP and I’m treated with even more : that’s the real magic of Sunwaves. What I love even more is to define my own party schedule in order to maximize my experience at the fullest, sooo I’m gonna head to Mamaia on the 1st of May, and actually because the festival will be sort of a musical marathon (not a speed race) I was thinking to go only to discover Paul K performance as I crazily love his musical productions, I’m so curious about seeing him play, plus the yearly Sepp b2b Nu Zau which will doubtlessly be on my list. I’m pretty much in the ‘let’s go with the flow’ mindset so let’s see how the night will go, nevertheless I think that my best move will be to sleep and come early on the Thursday because this is the beginning of every serious things.
Indeed, there is no way I’m missing the performances from my dears Iuly.B and Cosmjn as I never saw them play there, and of course on my Thursday list I’m definitely gonna attend Sublee, Prichindel and Dewalta as they always deliver proper grooves, I do remember a performance from Dewalta in 2018 there and it was absolutely stunning. For this Thursday actually, I think I’m gonna break a bit after Sublee’s performance and come back for Cosmjn and Dewalta ones, because the Friday will be even longer so I’m gonna play it safe. Because yesss, the Friday will be starting early again, and this is also where things get complicated when it comes to my schedule, sometimes I wish I could just multiply myself. For example, one of the sets that should not be missed is doubtlessly Lizz, but in a realistic manner my body doesn’t stand up for 40h anymore – but who knows.
On the other hand, there will be a Giegling night, I never heard Edward be playing live and this is definitely something I don’t want to miss. However my best bet is that I’ll be recovering up to Julian performance in the 3rd room on the Friday night, this is the first time he performs in this room, I’m not missing it at no point and I’m super looking forward to it, especially as Andrei Ciubuc and RPR Soundsystem will be grooving the room even more afterwards. The little detail here is about the room, because in the tent 4, in the exact meantime, Olga Korol, SIT, Obee and Tomas Station will be playing too sooo I’ll have to see how to handle that onsite. The Friday will definitely be the bigger day, because I mean, there’s no way I’m leaving the beach until AT LEAST the end of Margaret Dygas set – she’s my queen – and of course right before, the live from Ion Ludwig I’d never miss. I would love so much to see Sonja Moonear and Raresh be playing too but honestly I think I’ll have to think twice about it because of the following day.
I’m most certainly gonna be breaking again up to Maher Daniel and Ricardo Villalobos – ma passion – and I’m just the happiest to see mi hermano favorito Alexis Cabrera playing his unique live there as well as Piticu and Cap, they’re all definitely some of the performances I’m so crazy about attending. I think a proper recover will be much needed afterwards, so my best guess is that I’m gonna crash until ZIP. I’m also pretty curious about discovering Cuartero and Archie Hamilton sessions in the 2nd room, and I’m gonna treat myself with a performance I used to be crazy about but that I haven’t enjoyed for a very long time : Joseph Capriati – who happens to play twice or maybe is it a 24h full set here – maybe he’s actually planning to break his own record of dj set, anyways, I’m doubtlessly gonna check that out. Not all along though because Rhadoo and Petre Inspirescu will be playing in the meantime, and there’s just no sense in coming this far to Mamaia and be missing these sets which are always some of the best there. I’m also verrrrry curious about Arapu and Priku being playing b2b because I actually missed them in Zanzibar and according to the videos but also the feedbacks I heard afterwards, I’m not gonna make the same mistake twice.
